WordPress 3.9 was released yesterday (April 16), it was named “Smith” in honour of the great Jazz organist Jimmy Smith. It’s the 3rd update from WordPress in less than 2 weeks, although the previous two were a security point release and a quick follow-up bug release.
Note: We’ll be updating client websites over the next few weeks as plugin developers catch up / issue new releases to cater for any WordPress 3.9 changes (it’s gonna be a busy couple of weeks!).
The updates to 3.9 include:
- Improved visual editing
- Edit images easily
- Drag and drop your images
- Gallery previews
- Live widget and header previews
- Some audio and video enhancements
Improved visual editing
The updated visual editor has improved speed, accessibility, and mobile support. You can paste into the visual editor from your word processor without wasting time to clean up messy styling (that often gets imported from documents like Microsoft Word!).
Edit images easily
With quicker access to crop and rotation tools, it’s now much easier to edit your images while editing posts. You can also scale images directly in the editor to find just the right fit.
Drag & drop your images
Uploading your images is now easier than ever. You can just grab them from your desktop and drop them onto the editor.
Galleries now display a beautiful grid of images right in the editor, just like they would do in a published post.
Live widget and header previews
We really like this change. You can now Add, edit, and rearrange your site’s widgets right in the theme customiser. No “save and surprise” — you can preview your changes live and then only save them when you are ready.
The improved header image tool also allows you to upload, crop, and manage header images whilst customising your theme.
Audio and video
Images have galleries; WordPress have added simple audio and video playlists, so you can showcase your music and clips.
